Chapter 11
Dodsworth caught Longarm alone at the Western Union office closer to the railroad station. Longarm had just wired a progress report, such as heâd made, to his home office. Dodsworth said he was there to do much the same and, whilst he was at it, see if he could build a fire under them to get those extra sheepherders out their way.
As they stood in the doorway, with Longarm facing out, he spotted that big Mex sombrero with the scrawny kid under it. The muchacho was hunkered on his heels with his back braced against the adobe wall of a sideyard on the shady side of the street, just out of easy pistol range.
Longarm said, âDonât look now. But one of us is being followed. As an educated guess, Iâd say it was me. After that it gets murksome. Judith Morrisonâs faction knows where I am. I told her where Iâd be. The peace party Marmion MacEwen rides with knew where I could be found when she found me last night. I shook that kid off before I dined with Don Jesus last night. I wonder what the little piss antâs waiting for me to do. Would you care to help me catch him soâs we could mayhaps find out?â
Dodsworth asked what he had in mind.
Longarm said, âHeâs been put on my tail, not yours. Why donât you send your own wires to Washington whilst I have a smoke, here? After both of us are free to move faster, Iâll sashay off up the tracks as if to see how them sheep are doing. You stay here in the shade and just watch until the kid unglues his shirt from that wall to tail me some more. You let him tail me âtil heâs just in sight with his back to you. Then you tail him âtil all of us are over in the rail yards and Iâll see if I can get him to follow me along one of them narrow lanes betwixt the blocks of stock pens.â
He gave Dodworth time to get the picture and added, âI donât need to look back. Heâll have no call to suspect Iâm on to him before I get to the far end to stop and just double back on the little shit. Heâll run from me, right into you. How do you like it so far?â
Dodsworth hesitated before he asked, âWhat if heâs armed? How do we explain it if I wind up hurting somebodyâs darling boy?â
Longarm shrugged and asked, âHow do you know there ainât a big black booger hiding under your bed? The kid canât be twelve years old and heâs bare of foot and wearing no more than peon cotton under that expensive hat he found somewheres. But let it go. Iâll catch him some other way, if he doesnât chop me up with that battle axe heâs packing.â
Dodsworth protested, âI never said I wouldnât. I just need some time to take this all in. Iâm not a violent man, ah, Buck.
